ISO 9001 was created in 1987. Our society has changed a lot since then, with new needs and discussions taking place among the population. We now want to ensure not only that product quality will be good, but that the company maintains good standards of conduct with its employees and the environment.Modern new certificationsEnvironmental activism, the voice of groups asking for the end of animal testing, and the rise of vegan products have driven the need for new certifications.Different types of seals for vegan / cruelty-free product packagingThe seals above can be seen on some beauty and food products. Beauty products were "in the old days" tested on animals before coming into contact with human skin; today, with technology, it is possible not to need to carry out this type of test and still maintain product safety.Obtaining these certificates ensures that companies not only have efficient quality management, but can achieve goals beyond that. In addition to having a positive influence on the market, which is pressured in chain to adhere to the movement against testing, the achievement of these certifications encourages a "seal culture." It creates more conscious consumers and makes the search for products more refined. With these demands, the need was seen to once again create an ISO certification that goes beyond the original one, Environmental Management. The creation of ISO 14000 standardThe entire process of developing ISO 14000 was similar to what happened with ISO 9000. ISO 14000 follows the same system as ISO 9000, that is, there will be no ISO 14000 certification, but a certification based on 14001, a standard which is the only one in the ISO 14000 family that will allow one to have an Environmental Management System certificate (EMS).ISO 14000 – Environmental Management System – Specifications with guidance for use, establishes requirements for companies to manage their products and processes so that they do not harm the environment, that the community does not suffer from the waste generated, and that society benefits in a broad sense. Thus, for the company to obtain an ISO 14000 certificate, or rather, an ISO 14001 certificate, it is necessary to meet the requirements regarding its environmental policy, regarding procedures that allow identifying, knowing, managing and controlling the waste it generates during the processing and use of the product (air emissions, liquid effluents and solid waste), regarding legal requirements, among others. In determining its environmental aspects, the organization may consider:a) emissions to air;b) releases into water;c) releases into land;d) use of raw materials and natural resources;e) use of energy;f) energy emission (for example: heat, radiation, vibration, noise and light);g) generation of waste and/or by-products;h) use of space.Link to the ISO 14001 certificate in PDFHere you can download the ISO 14001 certificate in PDF.The creation of ISO 22000 standardThe worldwide need to ensure food quality and safety has always been a concern for many producers, processors and distributors. In this sense, countries sought to develop, voluntarily, individual standards with this scope. There were already more than 20 different food safety standards in the world when ISO – International Organization for Standardization decided to work so that there would be only one accepted worldwide, which, in addition to ensuring food safety, would avoid the creation of trade barriers disguised as technical ones. The publication of ISO 22000 – Food Safety Management Systems – Requirements for any organization in the food chain – by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), in September 2005, was the definitive response to the world's concern in harmonizing concepts in the issue of food quality and safety and, therefore, making processes traceable and under continuous management, with international recognition.Problems related to failures in food safety such as in the Backer brewery, both in developed countries and in developing ones, have intensified interest in preventing them throughout the production chain. ISO 22000, proposed by consensus among specialists from the food industries and governments, harmonizes the requirements for safety assurance practices throughout the world. The greatest benefit of ISO 22000 is the provision of a single framework for companies anywhere in the world to implement the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points system (HACCP), which we will study in Lesson 7, to ensure food safety in a harmonized way, which does not vary regardless of the country or related food product. The standard therefore aims to guarantee the supply of safe food to the consumer market. All sectors involved in food production are certified, considering the Critical Control Points, that is, points where there are risks of food contamination. Employees need to receive training on good manufacturing practices and this is a prerequisite for the implementation of HACCP, which is part of the standard. Employees will be trained in HACCP and also in the requirements of ISO 22000, as they must comply with them in practice. The company's structure needs to be suited to the standard's requirements, starting with good manufacturing practices. There are several requirements, such as wooden utensils that cannot come into contact with food, windows must be screened, etc. This will depend on the analysis of the process to define the necessary improvements. To comply with the standard, it is necessary to implement good manufacturing practices, HACCP, and create a Food Quality and Safety Management System.Link to the ISO 22000 certificate in PDFHere you can download the ISO 22000 certificate in PDF.Summary about ISOThere are many paths that lead to quality. One of the most widely promoted paths today – to the point of being likened to a fad, given the growing adoption seen in all corners of the planet – is the use of the standards created by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as a tool aimed at ensuring quality. Seeking to avoid the great proliferation of standards, ISO created a committee with the objective of evaluating the standards already created and, in 1987, launched the standards for the ISO Series 9000 Quality System.ISO seeks for the company to have its documentation available in an accessible, fast, and easy-to-understand way for everyone, and for the means of carrying out the work to be in accordance with the needs so that they can meet the requirements of the standards. ISO 22000 was created so that there would be only one standard – accepted worldwide – which, in addition to ensuring food safety, would prevent the creation of trade barriers disguised as technical ones.Checklists to apply ISOSome consultancies make their checklists available to verify whether they are applying ISO correctly.- This is the case of Safety Culture- Or the Cyro Barreto- Or the Apopartner- Or the QMS Brasil ISO 9001- QMS Brasil ISO 14001- QMS Brasil ISO 22000Evidently, these checklists are a bit “broad” and even too “abstract.” This is due to two reasons: (1) each company will have its own adaptation; it is not possible for a furniture manufacturing company to apply the same quality models as an IT company; (2) they keep the game hidden to show that the consulting process to adapt to ISO is not simple.ISO case studyThere are several case studies about ISO and how it has brought results to various companies.
