Retreat fits best in tempo or combo-oriented decks that benefit from replaying units with strong “enter the battlefield” effects, protecting key units from removal, or re-triggering channel-based synergies, especially since the exhausted rune helps smooth future resource turns rather than provide immediate tempo; it’s particularly strong in reactive control shells that value flexibility and in synergy decks that can turn the bounce into card or board advantage, but weaker in aggressive decks that can’t afford to lose board presence. Compared to similar effects, a zero-cost protection spell, a version that readies the channeled rune instead of exhausting it, or a bounce that can target any unit (including enemy threats) would generally be stronger in raw tempo or versatility, so if cards like “Phase Shift” (pure protection) or broader bounce spells exist in the format, they may outclass Retreat depending on the meta.
