About Cinder Strike
Cinder Strike, Sorcery, designed by Joshua Raphael first released in Jan, 2026 in the set Lorwyn Eclipsed.
Cinder Strike would fit best in an aggressive or midrange red deck that either doesn’t mind putting -1/-1 counters on its own creatures or actively benefits from them—such as decks with creatures that have death triggers, persist/undying-style synergies, creatures that can shrug off counters (like those with +1/+1 counters to offset them), or sacrifice themes where a weakened creature is expendable. In a vacuum, though, this card is below rate compared to existing red removal: **Lightning Bolt** (1 mana, 3 damage to any target), **Play with Fire**, **Skewer the Critics**, **Abrade** (flexibility), and especially **Lightning Strike** (2 damage to any target at instant speed for 2 mana) are generally stronger and don’t require a drawback; even for 4 damage, cards like **Roast** or **Rending Flame** are more efficient or cleaner in competitive formats. Because the base mode is just 2 damage to a creature at sorcery speed and the upgraded mode requires harming your own board, Cinder Strike
