Phyrexian Totem, Artifact, designed by John Zeleznik first released in May, 2020 in the set Time Spiral and was printed exactly in 2 different ways.
A deck focused on sacrificing permanents for value or utilizing artifacts as creatures would benefit from including Phyrexian Totem. However, there are better options available, such as Phyrexian Altar or Phyrexian Tower, which provide more versatile and powerful effects for sacrificing creatures or generating mana. While Phyrexian Totem could see play in specific strategies, it may not be the optimal choice compared to other cards with similar abilities.
09/25/06
When damage is dealt to Phyrexian Totem, its triggered ability will trigger. A number of permanents equal to the amount of damage dealt will be sacrificed when the ability resolves. It doesn’t matter if Phyrexian Totem isn’t on the battlefield when the ability resolves, as long as Phyrexian Totem was a creature as it left the battlefield. If one of the permanents sacrificed is Phyrexian Totem itself, the requisite number of other permanents must still be sacrificed.
