About Netherborn Altar

Netherborn Altar, Artifact, designed by Titus Lunter first released in Apr, 2020 in the set Commander 2020 and was printed exactly in 3 different ways.

This card could be beneficial in a commander deck that focuses on reusing the commander's abilities or leveraging their presence on the battlefield. Decks that rely heavily on their commander's abilities and can afford to lose some life for that advantage would find Netherborn Altar useful. However, there are better alternatives like Command Beacon, which allows you to put your commander back into your hand without losing life, making it a more efficient choice for most decks. Netherborn Altar could see play in niche strategies that can capitalize on its unique effect, but in general, Command Beacon is a more versatile and powerful option for commander decks.

Rules

04/17/20

If you have two commanders in the command zone, Netherborn Altar’s ability puts one of your choice into your hand, not both.

04/17/20

Putting a soul counter onto Netherborn Altar is part of the cost to activate its ability, and counting the number of soul counters is done as the ability resolves. Players may take actions between those times to change the number of soul counters, perhaps by removing them all so that you lose no life.

04/17/20

The “commander tax” increases based on how many times a commander was cast from the command zone. Casting a commander from your hand doesn’t require that additional cost, and it doesn’t increase what the cost will be the next time you cast that commander from the command zone.
