The Sage of Shaila's Claim would be beneficial in a deck that focuses on energy counters and synergies, such as a green energy deck in Magic: the Gathering. While it provides a quick boost of energy counters upon entering the battlefield, there are more powerful energy-generating cards like Longtusk Cub or Rogue Refiner that may be more effective in competitive play. However, for a casual energy-themed deck, the Sage of Shaila's Claim could still see play as a budget-friendly option.

Energy counters aren’t mana. They don’t go away as steps, phases, and turns end, and effects that add mana “of any type” to your mana pool can’t give you energy counters.

Keep careful track of how many energy counters each player has. You may do so by keeping a running count on paper, by using a die, or by any other clear and mutually agreeable method.
